Wilton Manors is technically it's own city within the boundaries of Fort Lauderdale. And while the city of Wilton Manors does have it's own police force and city government, I personally consider it an extension of Fort Lauderdale and a cluster of five or six different neighborhoods. It is very typical for a buyer to look at property in Wilton Manors as wells as several neighborhoods within Fort Lauderdale.
Known as the "Island City", Wilton Manors is surrounded by water with the Middle River covering the city in a circle. In addition to the Middle River, there are numerous canals and waterways that offer opportunities for water sports and boat dockage (all waterways flow through at least two Fixed Bridges, some quite a few). In addition to boating, these waterways are often desirable to simply offer a connection to nature amidst city living.
While I tend to view Wilton Manors real estate as an extension of Fort Lauderdale, there is no question that Wilton Manors has its own distinct "downtown hub" which is the shops, restaurants, and bars of Wilton Drive. Those who live near Wilton Drive can truly experience city living with the ability to walk and leave the car at home.
No discussion of Wilton Manors would be accurate without acknowledging it's large gay community. From local politicians who have been comfortably "out" for years, to being home to the majority of the Fort Lauderdale area's gay nightlife, Wilton Manors has earned a well deserved national reputation as being one of the most welcoming cities anywhere to gay men and women.
