While my Spanish needs a refresher, I’m told this means “The Olas”. All joking aside, when you think of Fort Lauderdale you think of Las Olas. To many this destination is the premier spot in town from both a place to go for a great meal and night out to the ultimate luxury landing spot for real estate. Las Olas Boulevard runs from the Ocean to Downtown and along the way becomes Fort Lauderdale’s “Rodeo Drive” with upscale shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. In the real estate world, the Las Olas area starts at the Intracoastal Waterway and consists of a few condos and townhomes with the majority of the area being expensive single family homes that make up the “Las Olas Isles” whereby each street is mini island (with a small bridge) and every home is located on a deep water canal.
The neighborhood demographics include well-heeled, full time locals as well as being the home to numerous vacation properties from owners who choose Las Olas as their second (or third, or fourth) home. A drive up and down “the Isles” will find stunning mansions, professional landscaping with not a palm frawn overgrown, and more than a few mega-yachts docked up and down the waterways. A rather large neighborhood that is home to more than 1,000 homes, the Las Olas neighborhood is always bustling with people jogging or rollerblading, contractors building the next masterpiece, or a lucky homeowner on their way out to enjoy their day.
To many there is always a debate of which is Fort Lauderdale’s “best” neighborhood. While there is of course no perfect answer, to many Las Olas offers the right combination of many factors: close proximity to Port Everglades for the boater, walking distance to restaurants and “action”, a visually appealing neighborhood of many beautiful homes, and being on the “right” side of the Intracoastal. In my experience, no one is ever not impressed by Las Olas. Some waterfront buyers will look from Rio Vista (south) to Bay Colony (north) and some will only want to live in Las Olas.
