Bay Colony is one of Fort Lauderdale's most exclusive neighborhoods and is one of only two guard gated communities in town (with Sea Ranch Lakes being the other). Bay Colony is a small neighborhood of approximately 200 homes that are all located on deepwater canals and all the homes have been built custom. Located East of US1 and North of Commercial Boulevard, the entrance to Bay Colony is off Bayview Drive at the North end of The Landings neighborhood.
A drive through Bay Colony (if you can get in) reveals mature oak trees, slow curving streets and many beautiful homes including those built in the last 10 years and many original custom mansions that have either been remodeled or still look grand. It is quite common for homes to have well in excess of 150' of water-frontage with many homes having a total of 200'+ of dockage which translates to many fine yachts docked in the neighborhood. In recent years one of Fort Lauderdale's more stunning estates was just completed in Bay Colony (a contemporary masterpiece with several hundred feet of Intra-coastal and canal water-frontage) plus a recent "teardown" of a home with 700' of water-frontage means another custom stunner will be along shortly (or a few years).
Bay Colony is popular among both locals and seasonal homeowners alike. Some purchase with the security being the primary reason, while many others simply fall in love with a particular home after searching numerous neighborhoods. Many residents ultimately prefer living in the NE section of Fort Lauderdale which for many is a trade off between a longer trip to the Ocean and a quicker trip to the private school (Pine Crest, Saint Mark's, and Cardinal Gibbons are all less than 5 minutes away). Either way Bay Colony remains as one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Fort Lauderdale.
